What Is The New Media Certificate?

“The New Media Certificate supplements any undergraduate or graduate degree and is a credential that demonstrates a student is technowledgeable: the understanding of new media technologies and their application in a chosen field.”

For me, the NMI is a resource which bolsters my public relations degree and provides a technological foundation to the communications field. The various courses in this program challenged me to produce content geared toward a digital audience, and I expanded my understanding of what communications can look like.

I’ve learned how to build and design websites using various techniques including HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, WordPress and Javascript. These technical skills strengthen my creative communication skills. As a web developer, I ran into issues relating to incorrect code, wrong file paths and changing directories. I was able to troubleshoot these issues and solve the problems set before me. Troubleshooting is not a skill that can be taught, but the courses in the NMI helped me develop the skill of fixing an issue on my own.
Website Development

This project showcases my skills in web design. I was given free-range to choose whatever kind of website I wanted to build. I chose to redesign a website to increase its readability and update its look and feel.
I chose to use WordPress as my site builder because I wanted to dive into the custom CSS, plugins and widgets available on WordPress. This was by far my favorite project because this redesign resembles work I could be doing for a client in my future career.
Native App Development
Course Description: “Native App Development introduces students to native application development. Students learn the fundamentals of native application development for platforms such as iOS, tvOS, and watchOS with modern programming languages such as Swift.
Students are introduced to object-oriented programming, MVC application design, IDEs such as Xcode, various frameworks and more.”
Through this course, I learned the basics of SwiftUI and how to implement APIs into my app coding work.
